FILM PRODUCTION
I have a keen interest in film and film production stretching all the way back to the 1990s where myself and friends uses to make awful productions with a Sony 8mm camcorder.
Mini documentaries and short films are the main focus these days, and below you can find links to the projects that I have been involved in as crew, composer, or any other roll.

THE FINAL CONFESSION OF JOHNNY HUNTER (2022)
Written by Alasdair I. Shaw
Directed by Alastair Rennie
A short film about an identity stealing vampire who documents his final thoughts before attempting suicide by sunlight.
I was the editor, composer, and sound designer on this film. There was no real director to speak of, and the lead did all his own filming so was given the director's credit, and I was given free reign on post-production choices.

CAPTAIN LOCKDOWN (2020)
Written by Alasdair I Shaw
Directed by Alan Stares
This was a short film project written by Alasdair I. Shaw. The plot focused on a group of Scottish superheroes and their place in a world where Covid Lockdown was in force.
I was the editor, composer, and sound designer on this film. I was also credited as director, but it was really in name only as I simply put everything together.

SYTH: Road to Infinity (2018)
Shot & Directed by Alan Stares
This was a promotional mini-documentary short for a band whose album I was recording (and also playing bass on).
The ten minute film consists of interviews about the new album, footage from the preview party in the Solid Rock Cafe, and other fun nonsense.
Shot guerrilla style with an iPhone SE.

HAM AND CHEESE (2018)
Written & Directed by Chris Bannerman
Horror short made for the Frightfest competition.
A young girl is menaced and murdered by an otherworldly hooded figure as she makes a sandwich and chats to Osprey - her home A.I. machine.
I came on as sound recorder, composer, and Foley designer to score the film. I also had a starring roll as the hooded killer and the voice of Osprey.
The film has had some screenings but an official release is is still tentative at the discretion of the director.

FRECK FORCE 5 (2013)
Directed by Chris Bannerman
Marketing advert for the Freckfest music festival in Irvine featuring Kell's Belles.
Freck Force 5 are a female agent team sent out to collect items so that the Freckfest festival can go ahead.
I was brought on to do the music and sound design of this advert, including a 60s sounding intro piece as well as the main score.
I've had worse jobs.

HIDDEN TIGER (2000)
Written & Directed by Derek Barclay
Hidden Tiger was a martial arts short written and directed by Derek Barclay for his University media course. It tells the tale of a man who is mugged while out jogging and cannot defend himself, but then learns the ways of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune do and uses it to finally defeats his foe.
I was cast in the movie as the villain, and was also brought on to co-choreograph the fight scenes. Filmed in the year 2000 with a three man crew consisting of myself, Derek, and cameraman Alasdair Shaw. The film also has a cameo by Divide drummer Ali Walker.
The film is unfortunately unavailable for viewing due to lack of a good high resolution copy.

TRENCH: All Exits Lead South (1997)
Shot & Directed by Alan Stares
This was my first foray into making a documentary whereby I followed local grunge/metal band TRENCH around for the summer of 1997 and ended up with a 50 minute film of gigs, interviews, and party antics.
Again, just me, a camcorder, some friends as crew, and no other gear.
The original footage was lost, but I managed to digitise and restore an old VHS copy, although the quality remains a bit flickery.

DUEL (1997)
Written & Directed by Alan Stares
Our first production from 1997 was a terrible, martial arts/fantasy film about half demon twin brothers raised by mystical monks. One of the brothers is killed by a demonic assassin and the other goes on a quest for revenge.
Filmed on a single 8mm camcorder with no other equipment, no costumes or make up, and no experience whatsoever. The scenes were just one long shot and the fights were awfully choreographed with punches and kicks noticeably missing their targets (wearing jeans didn't help with the kicking either).
The film was never really finished, but I re-edited an assembly cut in 2017 where I took advantage of my "newly" acquired musical skills (which I didn't have at the time of filming) and wrote a whole new score and sound design. I also added in some missing scenes from the script which were never
filmed by way of voice overs, subtitles, and stand in shots.
It's still total crap, but you can view it here:
